(UN)CREDITED | The Story of Afro Dance

(UN)CREDITED | A DOCUMENTARY ON HOW AFRO DANCE TRANSFORMED GLOBAL POP CULTURE

Few people realise that many of their favourite dance styles originate straight out of West Africa.

(UN)CREDITED is a visual origin story set in Nigeria’s cultural capital, Lagos; celebrating the past, present & future of Afro Dance.

Follow the thrilling journey of two Nigerian dancers as they compete in the country’s biggest dance competition, Red Bull Dance Your Style. Meet the African pioneers who have shaped street dance and modern pop culture from Lagos to Los Angeles. A phenomenon they haven’t been credited for… until now!

A year in the making, (UN)CREDITED | The Story of Afro Dance was a labour of love highlighting the stories of Nigerian dancers within the Afro Dance community. Dance has contributed significantly to the Afro Beats music genre both in Nigeria and globally. However, while famous musicians often reap the rewards, dancers are left uncredited.

“A foot solider is defined as a person who carries out important work but does not have a role of authority in an organisation of field. Dancers have been foot soldiers for too long!”

- “Izzy” Odigie, Dancer.

Creatives Kyla Philander and Andrew Kirkby pitched the documentary in May 2021 to the global Red Bull Dance team. Collaborating with a talented cast and crew, under executive producer Keane Balt, the documentary launched with premieres in Johannesburg and Lagos on December 6th, 2022. The documentary is available on Red Bull TV.

“We are humbled to be able to tell this important story that puts a spotlight on the Afro Dance community and their contribution towards both culture and music globally.”

- Andrew Kirkby, Creative Director & Editor.
