Red Bull | Superlap | Brad Binder

Back in 2019, Iconic Agency pitched an outlandish concept to Red Bull:

If a Formula 1 car raced a South African Taxi, who would win?

*Spoiler alert*  You can watch Coulthard vs. Taxi and find out here!

Fast-forward to 2022, and we were tasked to make a sequel. But this time, with a KTM MotoGP bike!

Our idea was simple: Get South Africa’s fastest taxi driver, Jason Goliath, to train local MotoGP hero, Brad Binder, to set the lap record at Kyalami. Red Bull Superlap was born.

Iconic Agency teamed up and collaborated closely with local writers and directors, Glen Biderman-Pam and Oliver Booth from Panther Punch TV. We wanted to make a truly South African action-comedy, that would appeal to both local and international audiences, building up anticipation to the 2022 Austrian MotoGP, at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.

We set out to film this project over 4 days, with an incredibly dedicated crew, in the heart of the Highveld. The project was ambitious, with the Iconic production team having to lock off Nelson Mandela Bridge, Hartbeesport Dam and 5 km of Magaliesburg highway.

Superlap’s all-star South African cast included funny-men Jason Goliath, Sne Dladla and Nicholas Goliath, as well as cameos by Siya Kolisi, Pat Davidson and David Coulthard. Our camera department was led under the guidance of multi-talented DOP, James Adey (SASC), co-ordinating over 17 cameras simultaneously on the Kyalami lap day alone.

Iconic Agency’s in-house post-production team edited Superlap. Creative Director and editor Andrew Kirkby led the post-production on a tight turnaround of 3 weeks, supported by post-production supervisor Matthew Reeler and online editor, Dylan Wrankmore

Whether we had to orchestrate flight patterns on an airfield or manage multiple units in various locations, under the steady guidance of our production team’s immaculate planning, we feel very proud of Superlap. But rather than just read about the action, watch the film!
