The Small Business Handbook to Surviving 2020 #COVID19

2020. Am I right?

2020 was lining up to be our best year EVER at iconic.

Rewind two weeks, March 12th.

I was up in Johannesburg scouting locations. We were tasked to film a sequel to a Formula 1 ad we created last year for Red Bull, with David Coulthard. Suddenly the phone rang:

Fly home now, everything is cancelled.

So long story short, apparently some guy ate a bat and now a lot of us are unemployed.

COVID-19. I’d be hard pressed to find anyone who hasn’t been affected adversely by it (except maybe opportunists marking-up toilet paper and hand sanitiser online). But one sector that’s undoubtedly feeling the heat more than most are small businesses.

Let me tell you, a National Lockdown is not ideal for a small ad agency. I quickly found myself searching for advice online on how to cope with these unprecedented circumstances. As I read blogs, social media feeds, listened to podcasts and radio shows, I began to jot down all the best advice I heard from some of South Africa’s leading business minds. And so began a little passion project to help other entrepreneurs in the same boat - the heroes of our economy just trying to keep their team employed.

Here you have it, The Small Business Handbook to Surviving 2020:

If you would like to follow any of these business leaders like I do, here are their LinkedIn accounts in appearance of order:

  1. Vusi Thembekwayo - Business Mogul and Global Speaker

  2. Pavlo Phitidis - Founder at Aurik Business Accelerator

  3. Mike Anderson - National Small Business Chamber, Founder & CEO

  4. Rob Stokes - Entrepreneur & Chairman of Red & Yellow School

If this helps even one business owner, it would have been worth it. If it helps you, please slide into my DMs – I’d love to hear your thoughts and insights too.
