Now Is The Time For Creativity

So, we’re in a pretty interesting time of life right now. Just in case you’ve been living under a rock for the past few days or like Jared Leto, coming out of a 12-day silent meditation retreat… The quick update is that we’re under lockdown, ladies and gentleman, I’m not talking about the South African prison drama on Showmax, but boy oh boy, the Michael Schofield option sure is looking good right about now.  As of March 26th, South Africa has issued a 21-day lockdown which will last until midnight of April 16th.  Of course, we’re not the only country to go into lockdown - many others such as the likes of the UK, Spain, Belgium, Italy and many others have followed suit.

The virus that shall not be named has been spreading across the globe and now, I’m writing this in my backyard. Corona, damn it! You made me say it. Are you happy now? Turns out the beer is okay for you, the other thing, well, this Nando’s ad says it best:

It’s nearly an inescapable topic right now that weaves its way into our daily conversations.

Being at home, I’ve already made my fifth trip to the refrigerator. Now, I know I’m not going to find anything in there but it’s the walk that I find fulfilling, I’m getting my steps in, don’t judge me.  It’s at this point I realize that for these 21 days, it’s going to be important to have an alternative outlet besides pacing around the house as if I were training for the 2021 Racewalking Olympics, it could happen.

So I’ve decided to take on a small passion project. I love sneakers and the debates surrounding sneaker culture and where the culture originated. However, we’re not going to dive into that rabbit hole just yet but you will be seeing some ASICS sneakers in the mix.

As mentioned before, we’re in Lockdown, which means I’ve basically got to work with what I’ve got, A GH5s camera, some lights and of course, ASICS sneakers (I’m hoping this goes down as well as it does in those MacGyver movies).

With all this free time on our hands, it’s important to try tap into that creativity where and when we can.  As Joyce Carol Oates puts it “Constant interruptions are the destruction of the imagination.” Being home alone for the next few weeks provides us with less distraction and more opportunity to engage with our creativity. We may be in a period of lockdown to prevent a virus from leaving an area but that doesn’t mean your creativity has to be.

Tapping into your creativity can be as simple as just taking some time to yourself and allowing yourself to daydream. David Lynch, an American filmmaker, equates the process of catching ideas with fishing. The desire for an idea, being the bait on a hook and that patience is key. If you’ve got the time and enjoy the creative process, his masterclass is a must-see.

Below, you’ll find a few screenshots of the project I’ve been working on while in lockdown.  Disclaimer: It’s not perfect but it’s the progress throughout these 21 days that will get it there. Happy fishing!
